Lived on a farm on Hicksville Road. I attended the Island Trees, one room school house on the Hempstead Turnpike - six grades, one teacher, pot bellied stove, outside pump house, true Americana. Many other wonderful memories: going to the beach with a car full of family and friends; Grandma Walsh's delicious baked goodies - lamb shaped Easter Cake or the marvelous Christmas cookies; the coal fired kitchen stove; the Ragamuffin Parade on Thanksgiving Day; Mr. Retzler, owner of a nursery on Hicksville Road, pulled a line of kid filled sleds behind his tractor, on the Hempstead Turnpike during snowy winter days; the home town parades which displayed the strong patriotism and a time to see many friends.
