Coumatos, John

John Coumatos, a Bethpage High School Graduate (Class of '76) has been a Bethpage resident since 1972. After attending Nassau Community College and Hofstra University, John began working at and eventually became owner of B.K. Sweeney's Park-side Tavern. This restaurant has been a vital part of the Bethpage Downtown for decades serving generations of Bethpage families.

As the owner, John has been an active Volunteer in the community. He has been a member of the Knights of Columbus since 1984. In addition to being an active member of the Bethpage Chamber of Commerce, he was their "Man of the Year" in 2010. He was also honored by the St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee (of which he is an active member) when he was made Grand Marshall of the Bethpage St Patrick's Day Parade in 2007. John has also been a member of the Bethpage Midget Football Association from 1975-1985 and has served as their President in 1984.

As the owner of B.K. Sweeney's, he as hosted the annual Thanksgiving feast for over 100 Veterans from the Veteran's center in Northport and St. Alban's for many years. This is an annual tradition that continues to this day. John is also a frequent donor to St. Martin of Tours and the St. Vincent DePaul Society, with numerous donations to feed those in need. Any member of the Bethpage Community is well aware that a simple phone call to John will result in a generous donation to the many PTA, School, Scout, Church, Civic, and charitable events throughout the town of Bethpage.

John has stepped up to serve when called upon by Nassau County. He was selected to be Vice Chairman of the Nassau County Industrial Development Agency (IDA) and has volunteered his time from 2013 to the present. The purpose of the IDA is to help businesses relocate to Long Island and assist expand existing businesses which raises revenue and creates jobs. He was also selected to be on the six person RFP Selection Committee for the Redevelopment of the Nassau Veterans' Memorial Coliseum.


John has a long history of Community and civic activism and now feels a deep concern for the future of Bethpage, which has prompted him to run for a position as Commissioner of the Bethpage Water District. As a business owner and resident in the community, John is well aware of the challenges facing our community. John believes his varied experience as a business owner, volunteer and resident will bring a fresh perspective to the Bethpage Water District. John hopes he can count on your support on Tuesday, December 11th between the hours of 3PM and 9PM at Bethpage Fire Department Station 4 on Pine Avenue.
