Homeland Security

A proposed research facility for the Department of Homeland Security, in Bethpage, to develope new technology for first responders and create new jobs on Long Island. Researches would focus on producing new technologies, such as improved Global Positioning Systems and radiation-detection sensors availabe for police and first responders. Leonard M. Poveromo, director of technology development for Northrop Grumman, would be involved with the development of the technology center located in the old Grumman complex.

Reps. Steve Israel (D-Huntington), and Peter King (R-Seaford) are in favor of this facility.

Catherine Morrelly spoke in Bethpage, on Friday, as a new research business complex is christened the Morrelly Homeland Security Center after her late husband, C. Kenneth Morrelly, who conceived of the project.

The Morrelly Homeland Security Center will provide space for small companies working on homeland security technologies and will serve as a facility for personnel who may have to coordinate responses to terrorist attack or even a natural disaster.

Morrelly, who died, unexpectedly, October 1, of a heart attack at the age of 64. He was the driving force behind the establishment of the new homeland security center on the former grounds of the Northrop Grumman Corp. Complex. Morrelly felt the frustration then the need for this center as he watched the fall of the World Trade Center Twin Towers, 9/11. He persuaded the state legislators to provide $25 million in funding for the center, and he oversaw each and every detail of its construction, down to the color and fabric of the carpet in the auditorium.

On Tuesday, June 14, 2011 member of the CPHS attended a seminar and tour of the Morrelly Homeland Security Center in Bethpage, presented by the Town of Oyster Bay. "The Morrelly Homeland Security Center is a three floor, 90,000 square foot C41 (Command, Control, Communications, Computer, and Intelligence) facility that was established with a $25million grant from New York State. It has a wide-array of command and control capabilities. It is also home to Nassau County's Office of Emergency Management, where all emergency service communications and monitoring occurs within one building, ensuring shared critical information and instant communication.

The Morrelly Homeland Security Center's mission is to help protect the United States from man-made and natural disasters by bringing together the public and private sectors and academia to develop resilient and sustainable homeland security products and services. It also provides a state-of-art command and control center for government entities and offers the most up-to-date training and exercise programs for first responders and other homeland security end-users."
