Underground Railroad

A system of safe homes and covert travel modes that allowed black slaves from Long Island to evade recapture. The Long Island Quakers provided "safe homes" equiped with secret passageways. The Powell's were devout Quakers and were known to be of assistance to help free slaves. The Quakers from Long Island provided a network of safe havens in fellow Quakers homes upstate then all the way to Canada.
